    Default Wood lathe adjustment

Hi I just purchased a lathe and the speed adjustment handle doesn’t move. I noticed when the handle pulls out there’s a pin there that only sticks out a couple mill. Is that supposed to pop out to release something? Other than that it’s got me bugged any advice appreciated. Tried to post pictures wouldn’t work

If your speed adjustment is by means of a Reeves drive, which would almost certainly be the case if it’s a mechanical speed control, the lathe needs to be spinning when adjusting the speed.

On mine you had to push the lever inwards before it would move. If that doesn’t work, it might be worth posting a picture of the lathe, it would make it easier for others to identify the lathe and offer advice specific that model.

This: https://www.adendorff.co.za/wp-conte...anual-0909.pdf May or may not help.

Speed Control q The lathe motor must be turned on before you can use the speed control lever. q The speed control lever may be rotated to any one of ten fixed speeds. To set the speed, pull back on the speed control lever (1) and rotate the lever to the desired speed. Use the index plate (2) as a reference to select the desired speed.q Rotating the lever clockwise will increase the speed while a counter clockwise rotation decreases the speed.q You must move the speed control lever to the lowest speed position before turning the lathe off. Not complying may prevent the motor from starting.
So much timber, so little time.

Does the shaft that the handle is attached to feel like it has any slight rotational movement when trying to move the handle, or is it locked solid?
Is the pin you refer to that only sticks out a few mm a locating pin that the handle engages with when you select a speed, to prevent it from moving and changing speed?
Even with the lathe stopped you should still be able to rotate the handle a little bit, it's just not what you are supposed to do under normal operation. This video gives you the idea of how the system works so you can check a bit deeper if required.

Judging by those photos the actuator assembly is well lubricated and free so it looks like the problem must be in the moving half of the pulley on the headstock or the linkage going to it. The sliding half of the pulley needs to be able to slide along the headstock shaft so maybe it has been sitting for a while and got a bit of rust or corrosion inside. Try spraying some penetrant on the shaft and pulley bore making sure you don't get it on the pulley faces or belt. Let it sit for a day and then try operating the lever again. If you can't get it to move you might need to dismantle the pulley from the lathe and pull it apart to see where the problem is.

Thanks for all the advice the YouTube clips and manual were very helpful boys. What I tried put just the handle on the spline rod and put it in and turned it on and the speed slowed down and the pulley was opening and closing up so all that is good it looks like actuator was put in wrong I got to work out how that goes now

Great to see you got it all sorted. It's always hard to diagnose a problem when you don't have it in front of you to see what's happening.
