new to woodturning?
I just bought a second hand lathe. it has a dynalink sticker onit but looks exactly the same as the $99 gmc one at bunnings
I made a very simple stand for it, out of some old 50 * 200 hardwood i had lying around
I had a play the other day but when i wanted to remove the chuck to bolt on the face plate I couldnt get it off?
is it normal thread or lefthand thread? ( I didnt want to butcher it trying to get it off)
I bought some $30 lathe chisels from mitre 10 but after one use I cracked the gouge so took them back.
what is a good brand of chisel?
and is there anywhere on the northern rivers nsw (I'm in casino) where i can get them?
other that travelling to carbatec in brisbane?

It's got to be anti-clockwise (looking from the tailstock end) or else it would come off very quickly, by itself, as soon as you stuck a gouge into a piece of timber mounted on it.
.
By the way. As with most things you get what you pay forJack the Lad.

"P&N" are Australian made woodturning chisels, and have a good reputation.
"Robert Sorby" and "Hamlet" are two other brands with good reputations.
IMHO, a $99 lathe has got to be close to the pole lathes the bodgers used in the olden days, and they did some pretty impressive turnings.
I'm still on my Chinese cheapy, and learning how to be a better turner. I've now made 88 turned articles, some of which I'm quite proud of. I'm also learning what features I'd like in my next lathe, when and if I get one.
Enjoy, and don't think you've got to spend $3k on a DVR before you can turn.
Cheers,
Andrew

thanks for the replies
ive worked out how to get the chuck off. The wimpy tool that came with the lathe was too thin so I used a bigger spanner and off it came.
just have to convince my wife that i need $200 for chisels when the lathe cost a quarter of that
