Good Old Woodturning Book
I recently bought a bunch of books from an estate. One was Creative Woodturning by Dale Nish, published in 1975 by Brigham Young University Press.
Creative Woodturning: Dale L. Nish: 9780842504690: Amazon.com: Books
Nearly six hundred photographs accompany the text to clarify the operation of the wood lathe and its use for specific projects.
History
It is full of tips and step by step photos covering turning. As it is written before 4 jaw scroll chucks he shows how to do without.
This would be handy for those saving up for the chuck, but still wanting to make bowls or plates.
Your library may have it or used book sellers.
I highly recommend it.So much timber, so little time.

I have the same book. Found it at the Life Line booklets in Brisbane a few years ago. Paid $5 AU for it. It is an excellent learning manual.

I didn't think about a Mormon connection to wood turning. I do know about BYU, but university presses do print a lot of unrelated stuff.
This reference in my original post may not be apparent, it gives the history of the Utah Woodturning Symposium.
