Hi Makka, I noticed that you havn't had any replies. Was just wondering where this wall is located, is it in your bathroom?, passageway, laundry? Where do those other doorways lead to (only asking to get an idea of what sort of area it is, and maybe help clarify some possibilities for it.

The wall I want to paint is on the right in this pic (taken at entrance to bathroom):

A white cupboard is being made and installed in place of the old one.

In the middle in this pic (same wall):


The first door beside the wall leads to the toilet. The next door to the shower:

And at the far end is the door that leads outside.

This is the vanity that you can see the end of in the second pic:


Walls have since been painted in Antique White USA Gloss. Shower walls tiled in white. Toilet walls aren't tiled.

Without actually standing in it and understanding what other colours are used in the house......

Consider a lighter brighter colour as it's quite a dark little area. Perhaps a fresh bright green (see Wattyl's Bleached Turf) but you'd need to pick up that same colour in your accessories - towels, toothbrush holders etc etc.

what colour accessories do you have?

I would be looking for a flat finish rather than suede if the family is a mucky,grubby one. Easier to clean. If that is where they're all heading when they're filthy.

Maybe look at using a mirror to make the area look bigger. Plus a full length mirror in the bathroom is very very handy (and fun too) Make a funky frame to go around it that matches some of the accessories or features you've already got in the house. eg the black? pencil tile in your tiled areas, perhaps inlay some more of those into a nice blonde timber frame or use a continuous strip of black steel to mimic that black pencil look. Try to tie it all together rather than add an unusual feature.

Let us see the "after" pics too!

I did a search for the green you mentioned but couldn't get a pic. I don't like bright, bright colours. Would a green like these be nice (pink stars)? Or a light brownish (blue stars)?


A mirror could work. The frame might be a bit hard to do though. Are there any special mirror cuts / patterns that I could look into that might work with the room? Like lots of little square mirrors joined together?

squashed frog1, I was catually thinking along the same lines, although I wad thinking mirror tiles, could probably do a nice border/ frame with some smaller tiles.
If you are going to put a mirror above the vanity, what about puttiing a large print on that wall.
Just thinking, that wall is always going to be obvious, if you make it stand out too much, it might make the passageway feel a little more cramped than it is.

We are putting a mirror above the vanity; full length of the wall. I was wondering if another mirror on the other wall might be a bit of an over-kill.

I am scared now. I think I will just paint it the same as the other walls. Can't go too far wrong that way.

I have just been thinking about your idea of hanging pictures, and I really like it. I think 3 of those small paintings that go together would look really good hung down the top half of the wall.

Wonder where I can find them, I'll look on ebay later see if theres anything there.

What about if I hang a ladder like this on that wall?

I hadn't thought of a practical idea (the ladder) but wondered if you had, or could make, a longish woodwork piece specifically to place on the wall?

Me again.

I say no to the ladder - I am sure you will knock yourself on it when you going to the toilet - everyone cuts corners.

Visit a couple of tile shops they have fantastic hand painted tiles with little scenes on them, I picked up some 35 x 25 cm for $15.00 each with cute little boat / beach scenes on them. paint the edges and liquid nail them to the wall. or you can pop them in frames. Tho due to the location I can see anything hanging there would get knocked off.

Ikea have the mirror tiles you were talking about.

Just a thought, it may not be what your thinking of, but how about a medicine chest which is recessed into the wall so as not to be an obstacle, but still be practical. You would probably have to custom make it to fit, and the only thing would be the actual cutting of the wall.

I would start with a small hole and make it progressivly larger, it did a small aircon this way and I found it to be the best way to go. Then after, and when the hole is to the desired size, fit an internal frame for support and make the cabinet or in my case fit the aircon. As I said, just a thought!...

I don't know about cracking a hole in the wall, will have to see if that is even a possibility.

Been away for a few days and missed your questions. What did you end up deciding?

1. Don't tile that wall. Beleive me it won't work

2. I wouldn't hang paintings, you'll knock them down and they would get water damage.

3. Feature colour won't work, this whole wall isn't something you want your eye drawn to you want it to be broken up so it isn't such a huge chunk, not blaring at you in hot pink.

I reckon your best option is to create a recessed shelving unit. something about 600mm high by 300mm across with some really nice stained timber floating shelves, or glass shelves in it.

I don't think you would have to waterproof the area and i would just line it with a painted plasterboard finish.
