Thread: MDF Finishing

I used 2 pack on some MDF for my kitchen, filled the edges with timbermate first then sealed the whole thing with primer.

Ogee profile would be hard to fill, you could try mixing in water with timber mate to a smooth paste and finger filling the egde or have a look at mirostop by mirotone, a mate says its the best MDF edge sealer he has used.

automotive primer\surfacer.

I recently used a tip from a fine woodworking magazine article that suggested using a slightly wetter than normal mix of plaster board jointing/patching compound. It worked well and was easy to sand. The artilce also suggested an oil based primer as water based will tend to raise the fibres.

Paper hangers size (wallpaper paste) works fine, and is very cheap too.

The emphasis is on something that will seal the edge without allowing excessive absorbtion or swelling. Anything oil based seems to work, as do the various fillers.
You can paint with water based paint over an oil based primer.

Many thanks Guys. For every problem there are many solutions. From the suggestions provided I will first rub a filler of some sort into the edges, and sand Then taking into account the advice on not using a water based primer I have some Blitz Primer Sealer which is a Metho resin based composition which dries in a blink and might do the trick. Will give it a go and many thanks for contributions to the problem.
