    Thumbs down Get real

Thought you'd appreciate this one. My sister-in-law (SIL) has just had her house renovation completed. She has the usual set of problems and is going thru the process of correcting them. One of the most perplexing has been a simple linen cupboard. Essentially, the architects left 2 shelves for the cupboard off the plans and the cabinet maker make the cupboard according to spec. When SIL discovered this, she asked for the shelves. Some weeks later, the architects came back with a quote from the cabinet maker........are you sitting down....... $750 for a 2 malamine shelves:eek:   !!!!!!!!

I can think of only one (semi rational) reason why someone would do this and that is that they don't want the business. But this is insane, surely they don't realise the bad will that this generates? I'm in business (not this type of business) and I'm perplexed........ what is wrong with these sort of business people or am I just not getting it?

In the end, I wanted to see the comparison if I did the work. So, I just bought some malamine from Bunnies, cut it to size and fitted her new shelves. Didn't take very long and didn't cost very much (even accounting for time).

    Regards,
    Mike.

I think it is quite reasonable, I mean the cupboard is 2800mm high, 650mm deep and 725000mm wide. 2 shelves, 72.5 lengths = 145 metres at $3/m plus labour. Whats the prob?

My in-laws moved into their new house 8 months ago. When the kitchen was being installed they missed 1 malamine panel (about 70cmX50cm). According to company it took 2 weeks to cut another one. 2 weeks became 2 months, then 4 months then 8 months. FIL must have called them a thousand times with no luck. He has basically given up.

Now they are living in this beautiful new house and a new kitchen with 1 missing panel.

What we have learnt here is never pay someone the full payment until the whole job is done.

I don’t usually call someone a bastard but I cannot think of a better word right now.

One of the bigger motivating reasons for me leaving this industry. I've met a lot of cabinet makers over the years and have come to the conclusion that atleast half are bottom feeders too stupid to do anything else. It's one of the only trades where you don't need a ticket and therefore those who are too dumb to even pass a plumbing test go into cabinet making.

I've just finished a cashy for a friend were we had a shop make up a flat pack. The guy cut four of the doors too narrow and out of square. It was without a doubt the fault the cabinet shop but this jerk refuses to pick up the doors and fix them.

I've seen it time and time again where a shop abandons a job because the owners were trusting enough to pay in full before the job was finished.

i take offense to you saying that to be a cabinetmaker you did not need a ticket ,here in queensland you must fulfill a certain set of requirements before you can register as a cabinetmaker ,those who are not licensed work on a cash only basis and therefore those who use these "bottom feeders" have no protection through the licensing section of the building services authority here.
As for being to stupid to do anything else ,i would be more inclined to say that the industries high failure rate of businesses isn't so much stupidity but failure to reach a common figure for building cabinets so that a reasonable level of income can be expected ,and thus the hideous and stupid regime of under quoting will stop and the public can be assured that they will be treated as you would be treated yourself
