Cutting Buffalo Grass
Hi All,
I was interested to know if anyone has cut Buffalo grass with a Barrell Mower like a Scott Bonnar or some other brand and has had any success I know Barrell Mowers are usually used for couch lawns but I was interested to see if anyone has used them on buffalo and what sort of finish you get...I am mainly looking at the Barrell Mower purely becuase its action cuts grass and does not slash....

I cut my parents' buffalo lawn with a Scott Bonnar for over 10 years. The clean cutting action did improve the finish and over time, tended to make the grass healthier. The improvement was not as dramatic as with a couch lawn, but it was noticeable.
One thought - sometimes the self-drive would not work very well because the back roller would sink into deep patches. I would make sure that the lawn had been thoroughly de-thatched first and would de-thatch every year or so to encourage the runners to spread across the lawn rather than create thick clumps. That would help the mower.Cheers
