    Default Whipper Snipper Breakdown

    I'm having a bit of trouble with my whipper snipper. When I attempt to start it with the choke on, it starts momentarily for maybe 5 seconds, and then slowly dies. Prior to doing this, it was never able to idle - it would work fine so long as I had some revs applied to it.

    There is some old oil remnants around the top of the casing covering the motor. Is this more than a coincidence?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    some wipersnipers have a v/fine filter mesh inside the carby any bit of water will block it .

    Sounds like a Blocked Jet.

    OR

    Water.....could Try some Metho in the Petrol....say 5-10%

    Is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke -

    if 2 stroke check that the exhaust is not blocked up.

    4 stroke check fuel filters, fuel taps, and carby

    What Calm says - apart from the natural crud you
    may find in 2 stroke exhausts, hornets/wasps love
    similar places to build nests.

    Thanks for that. It is a Ryobi 2 stroke, and there is a bit of 'matter' up and around the fuel tank and spark plug. I'll pull it apart and give the parts a decent going over.

    Nuffy, another bit of 'useless info' I was given is
    that unleaded fuel will cause the diaphragm in
    carbys to harden if it if left for long periods.

    I story as I was told, was that with 2 stroke tools
    that are used infrequently, make sure you empty
    the fuel tank and run the motor until the fuel is
    used up.

    The same guy, who had been in the small motor game
    for a long time, told me that petrol degrades quickly
    and looses it's 'fizz'. The smaller the motor, the more
    sensitive it is to stale fuel.

    Yep,
    I have a Shindawa, Bought it as a Victa, 20 something years ago.

    I've replaced the Pickup Bladder thing from within the Fuel tank; Twice. NOTHING ELSE, other than Trimmer Line
    Symptoms were I pump it up,
    it'd run for about 5-10 Seconds then it'd Die.

    I had a similar issue with mine and once I removed the mesh filter inside the carby, problem solved. I will replace the filter asap though so I don't end up with blocked jets. Previously I'd even tried the metho without success.

    nuffy, first things first ...pull out the plug and clean it, being careful not to close the gap in the plug or you wont get enough spark....most snippers by rule of thumb will run ok if the gap in the plug is set about the same thickness as a hacksaw blade ....scrap off any black deposits with a knife ....next ....empty the fuel tank .....use it for cleaning etc ...get fresh fuel ...correctly measure the two stroke oil and add it .....refill the tank ....(do not add oil to tank ...keep a small fuel container only for this purpose ...add oil ......take it and add the required fuel to make up the right ratio of mix, all to common a mistake is the wrong fuel mix , this fouls the plug and gives poor performance, next ....dip the plug in clean fuel mix and screw it in...hand tight ...and a quarter turn is enough, dont over tighten it, apply the choke ..give it a couple of pumps on the fuel bulb....and pull the cord ....it should start.....the motor needs to warm up before taking off the choke, so try to keep it going for about 30 secs , then take off the choke ...dont be affraid to give it a rev or two ....this will clean out "the cobwebs"...

    look if the thing runs for 5 sec 90% of the the time it is fuel
    Ryobi scorpion are really bad for doing the same thing as yours it will be the filter in the carby, if you buy a carby kit it wont come with the filter .You can clean the plug and root around with it but clean the tank out with metho and some time there is a filter in the tank clean that sucker as well .l will bet my left one it is the carby

    I have had issues with Ryobi 2 stroke especially the weed Wasp units I have diagnosed mine and others as stale fuel a few weeks to 1 month is enough to cause issues, drain the old fuel and top fill with fresh fuel mix trust me I have found 3 already!!!!

    Clean the tank, wash out the carby, new fuel and plug. If it dont run then and has more than 30hours then its time for a new one.
