I have been researching insulation/soundproofing for a few days now and it is doing my head in, Rw, Rw/Ctr etc....

We are putting in a new first floor which will be above our existing ground floor ceiling, there will be 290mm between the existing ceiling and the new floor. We will have a bathroom and two bedrooms on the new floor. I want to put some insulation in to block some of the sounds from the kids rooms coming downstairs through the ceiling.

So far I know that rockwool is by far the best option for blocking sound, if I go with rockwool the R2.5 batts are 88mm high so I will still have a void of 210mm in there, will sound echo around inside the void? Will this be an issue?

The other option which works out cheaper than rockwool is to fill the complete 290mm void with cheap glasswool. I know glasswool isn't as good as rockwool at blocking sound but if you you have 290mm of it, it is better than 88mm of rockwool?

It's really hard to know what to do, anything with the word sound or acoustic in the product name automatically means it costs 4 times the price.

Any ideas?
