A bit left field but I need some input on a quick and dirty test to determine approximately how strong the aluminium poles are (I bought at a garage sale years ago) I need a centre pole 3000mm tall for my tipi for this winters base camp.
I do not know what alloy these poles are or what temper but they are Chinese and came out of one of those cheap garden shade shelters. 25mm OD tubing and .7mm or .8mm thick walls.
They are reasonably stiff and I cannot bend one over my knees without hurting myself.
Resistance to buckling is my prime concern Quite happy to destroy one section in testing
I need to replace the extremely heavy ( 3 kilo ) 25mm steel pole that came with the tent or I won't be able to pull it ( I need to keep the weight on the pulk below 65kilos ) this pole only weighs 600 grams so the weight saving is large but not if I have to take more than one spare section
