Hi all, I'm hoping some people out there are a lot more experienced / creative with me when it comes to these things! My partner & I recently purchased a 3BR weatherboard bungalow - it's quite traditional on the exterior and half modernised / half not on the inside. 2 of the bedrooms have very basic fireplaces (assumedly functioning as you can see out to the sky through the flute - however we'll never actually use them as fireplaces). They're just brick - painted on the exterior and raw brick / soot on the inside, with a tiled base extending out into the bedrooms.

Questions:
- what can we possibly do to make these look a lot nicer? They're pretty uninspiring as they stand!
- is it a silly idea to remove the base tiling all together? (we're going to re carpet the rooms & the bases take up valuable space, so it's tempting)

I've been searching online but can't seem to find any examples of before/afters where the fireplaces started off as simplistically as this...we'd like to end up with something modern (there doesn't seem to be any period detail worth retaining here!) and more sightly. Thanks so much in advance for any ideas you can throw my way!
