The plan is to paint the joists white and have a somewhat rustic looking ceiling, but still pretty, in a new kitchen. But there are some issues that need to be addressed. The biggest question I have is what to do at the ends of the joists. The gaps between the joists, just under the second floor floor, need to be covered. Some of the joists are a little warped or crooked creating a piece of wood or drywall to fit in between each one will be difficult. Also, wiring for lights needs to be hidden or arranged somewhere. Thinking about attaching 2x2" strips along the sides of all the joists, nailing to them some drywall (if required by fire code) and/or something that resembles beadboard, for a finished ceiling look.

Any suggestions for electricity, wiring, and capping the ends between the joists at the walls?
