I have used a system like johnnybegood for years. A bit of food colouring and a bit of kitchen detergent to reduce surface friction of the tube. Use a 3/8 pipe and it gives quicker readings than a smaller diameter. I first saw a one man level used when my pool was installed and it is level according to the contents!

As anyone used this type of water level - if so is it worth the $120 price tag?.

Thanking those in advance for their reply.

    MH,

try and go direct to a company called kaylok in melbourne, tell them you're a business buyer and they're only about $40. Alternatively, heaps on US ebay as well. I've got the pro model and it's good.

    regards,

    Not so level is it??
I know, Ive been caught out before using the ever relyable never wrong water level.

That happens if you use too small a hose as the skin tension on the surface of the water at each end of the hose can really mess things up.
    I wouldn't use less than 1/2" hose.

    Been done. They're called scooters.

Thank you Bob and AD for your replies.

I am in the process of making my own water level but using 9mm OD and 6mm ID clear tubing, which is the same as used on the Zircon water level shown on my previous post on this thread. So Bob you think that this equipment would be useless with such a small diameter?. My concern is when we had our house reblocked 6 months ago the company we hired to to the job used only a homemade instrument with the same diameters:eek:.

AD, I just looked in the white pages and noticed a company called kaylock (with a c in it) located in Clifton Hill - is that the one you mean?.

Once I have made my water level I will put some images on this thread to get the experts opinions.

    Cheers
    David

Although I've been told I have the gift of the gab, I wasn't able to purchase the water level from Kaylock's. In order to purchase items from there you need 3 written references and a business card.

I thought I would mention this so others don't waste there time (and petrol) going there unless you have a business - they are a wholesaler.

    David,

Kaylock seemed more than happy to sell to me direct - I do have a business as ther local rep in Tassie didn't stock the item. Kaylock themselves didn't stock the pro level so in the end I purchased from Zircon USA direct.

Zircon still sent it via Kaylock though.

I think it is absolute rubbish that a wholesaler cannot retail to the public, particularly when a $40 item is being re-sold for $120.

Did you call them before you went to ask if they would sell to you?

    Hi AD,

No, I didn't go in person for fear of wasting petrol & more importantly time. The facts I stated were the ones I was given from a lady working at the store - via telephone. I agree it isn't nice that people should mark up the price by as much as 200% but this practice happens in all industries. After the conversation I took up your other idea and noticed that they are being sold on the American Ebay for $40 Australian - I am awaiting a reply to find out the cost of posting the item. It is appalling to think you can purchase an item so far away for half the price and it doesn't cost me any petrol or stress.

What does it say about how "the system" works here.

    Cheers

    David,

that's why I buy all my Festool consumables from the US as the local importer rips us all off. Surely businesses would prefer 30% mark up to no sale at all - I can't figure it out. I think that a lot of businesses don't realise how easy international e-commerce is to the Australian consumer.

    Good luck with ebay.
