    Default #4 maple & rosewood

Were I of a different temperment, I might suggest this was getting out of hand quickly. However, we all understand that when you're at a stopping point in one project, you get restless and want to work on something. That's where I am right now.

The sapele & quilted maple box has had all the finish applied. It's currently just sitting there while the poly fully cures and it can be buffed out. The bloodwood & elm piece is just about ready to have the finish applied. The top & botom are being stained up still, and I'm giving them plenty of time to fully dry before going to the next coat. After the debacle of the intarsia stain/finish interaction, I'm not taking any chances with this one. That lesson was learned well. The jatoba guitar body is likewise at a standstill while I figure out how to fix THAT mess. A 4th project I haven't told y'all about yet is progressing nicely, but it's at a standstill as well - the glue is drying.

So what's a guy to do? We all know the answer to that one - start something else!

This is the carcass, lid, and bottom of the next box. The whole thing is 3/4" (19mm) thick maple. Yep - this thing is chunky! The carcass stands 3 1/2" (90mm) tall. The bottom will be rebated flush. Likewise, the lid will have a rebate instead of hinges.

See that pile of rosewood veneer sitting behind the carcass? Wouldn't you like to know what's going to happen with it? You'll have to follow the thread to find out, because I'm not telling you yet. All I'll say right now is that I'm not covering the whole thing in veneer.

Well, THAT didn't go like it was supposed to!

The plan was to bevel the sides at a 5 degree angle, then inlay large plates of rosewood veneer into all sides and the top, leaving about 1/4" (6mm) of maple showing as a contrasting frame.

It was all set to bevel on the table saw. When the blade wouldn't raise high enough to make the cut, I decided to do it on the band saw. Here's the results.

The band saw strayed a LOT. The bottom was routed before last nights fun, so they're paralell with the original sides. I WAS going to chisel them square. As you can see, the bevels are 14 different kinds of dorked up. $6 of maple and 2-3 hours of work down the tubes.

Character building isn't it . Hang in there.

I picked up some more maple this weekend. I'm going to have anothe rgo at it, but I son't believe I'll be trying to bevel the sides. If the first one turns out like I want, I may make a few more. I have some other interesting veneer that might look nice: lacewood, walnut, sapele, cherry, and lyptus.

Also, I'm figuring on NOT mitering the corners. I have this brand new dovetail jig just sitting there, begging to be played with. I'm just not sure about the dovetail/endgrain with the big panels od veneer. Any thoughts? It'll be a few days until I can get to it, so y'all have time to convince me one way or the other.

I tried out the dovetail jig today. It turns out I need a bearing for the router. Oh well. Mitered corners it is then. Or I could try some other kind of corner joint. Good thing I have plenty of time to do some research at my job.
