    Default 5th Anniversary keepsake box

LOML isn't much of a romantic, but with our second child on the way she does have a small collection of little things that should really be kept for posterity.... or at least for the 21st birthday party. So, we'll be celebrating our anniversary over the weekend and I've made this keepsake box for her.

The timber is Fijian Rimu with Tasmanian Black Heart Sassafras inlaid in the lid. Pretty simple joinery; dovetails, tongue and groove, a couple of dowels and some simple brass hinges. Finish is Ubeaut White Shellac, it will be buffed with white polishing compound and Ubeaut wax once it's had a few days to harden off.

P.S. This is my first box, I'm pretty please with it.

So you should be. The Boss will, I'm sure, be delighted to use it. Well done.

Thanks folks! I think it's fortunate that the images don't show off the flaws too much. I'm sure the average punter would pay no attention, but the little things matter to me and it could be a lot better.

The inlay for example wasn't quite a perfect fit and there is some exposed glue around a couple of edges and one of the mitres. A few of the cuts for the dovetails chipped out also, which needed to be filled and it seems I didn't get the fill colour right, so the fill is a bit obvious. I also didn't have the time to do proper preparation of the surfaces for French Polish, so a lot of the Shellac was slopped on and sanded back which has made the surfaces a little uneven... Of course, I'm the only one that will be this critical of the whole thing

I'm off to a little boutique sweets shop in the city tomorrow to find someting to fill it with. Being 8 1/2 months pregnant the LOML will say "Gee, that's a nice box....OH MY GOD IT'S FULL OF CHOCALTE!!!!" and proceed directly to the couch I reckon.

Great looking box and lovely idea for a present. Hope it ends up with lots of special keepsakes over the years.

My first thought was its nice and shiny. Also another box shape and design.

Thanks John, the boss thought so too It's hard to believe, but the chocolate contents didn't have as much impact as the box itself. *shrugs*
