Thread: Adhesive for felt

Good effort, Bob. I like the geometric patterns on the lids and the lids show a good colour combination.

As to linings, antique boxes were often lined with thick paper. I found some suitable flocked paper on the web:

I used the paper on a box I restored and adhered the paper with a thin layer of liquid hide glue (not the hot stuff, the room temp hide glue from Titebond).

Anyhow after reading all the suggestions above for attaching felt lining I decided to try with self adhesive felt and light cardboard.
The felt from Spotlight and some 250 GSM card from the $2 shop.

I cut and folded the card so that it was a neat fit into the box.
The card was then stuck to the felt and the felt trimmed to shape.
A bead of adhesive around the top inner face of the box and a few drops on the base.
The felt/board was then pushed into position.

I fully expected that I would be able to hide the edge of the card by "roughing" the felt a bit but that was a failure.
The edge of the card shows so looks like I remove the lot, clean out the glue and have another go.

Next time I will cut the card about 5mm short of the top and adhere the exposed felt edge to the box, should look a lot better.
Thought I would show the error to assist anyone trying the same method.

The boxes are Tas Blackwood and the top is a medley of Tas Blackwood, Hoop Pine, Tas Oak and Meranti from offcuts in the shed.

You need to fold the felt around the card. The card is cut slightly under size say 1 to 2 mm and the felt is then cut larger than the card, say 10 mm either side and both ends, the corners of the felt are then cut at 45 deg so that when the felt is folded over the corners do not overlap, this piece is then glued into the box.

You will have to do a test piece to see how much the size of the card is increased when the felt is folded over at both ends, get a small off-cut of card, measure it one way (in mm) wrap a piece of felt around it at both ends and measure it again, it will have increased by about 1.5 mm, you will then know to cut your card 1.5 mm (or whatever) smaller than the size of side you need to line, it should make a snug fit, do both sides and then the front and back, depending on what material is used you sometimes cannot see the corner joints.

The base is not important because the sides will cover any gaps or discrepancies when they are inserted.

To homesyI saw some great patterned paper, some with a flock pattern both at the $2 shop and at Spotlight and considered using it but was concerned about wear from the ladies trinkets that will be in the box.
It would be good for a lid lining though, future project.

Maybe once the paper is stuck down it will not wear, I have seen books etc stipulating the use of Rice paper as a lining and I think that is very fragile when it is unsupported.

I still prefer material such as velour or pig suede or faux velvet, it just adds that bit of luxury.
