Default Wanting Advice Concealed Barrel Hinge

I am attempting to make a jewellery box using 5mm concealed barrel hinges. The back is 12 mm and the sides are 19 mm .
My problem is that when the hinges are installed there is a gap large enough to drive a truck through (4mm).This gap is due to the way the hinges pivot.
Has anyone used these hinges or have any suggestions how to bring this gap down to 2 mm?

Hi Harold, which type of barrel hinge are you using?

Can you post a pic of the hinge in position?

I have used barrel hinges on this and there is maybe 0.5mm gap.

The 5mm barrel hinges are different and requires chamfers on the back edge of top and bottom in order to allow the box to open back and stay open. May be able to do a little less than that but it does leave a decent birdsmouth look on the back.

Sorry about the previous post stuffed that up.
Hi martrix, sorry havent learned how to post pictores yet. It is just a standard 5 mm round barrel hinge (cornuta brand).

Thanks Corey, what if you were to countersink the hole would that work.

I am not sure what you mean by countersink the hole Harold. You need to drill the holes to a certain depth so that the middle of the hinge is exposed when the chamfers are in place.

Boxinator is correct. With those 5mm hinges, you need to chamfer the back edge which will then let you close/open the box with with no gap.

I used the 10mm hinges which you don't need any chamfer so its nice and neat all round, however your wall thickness is limited to about 13mm and you need to drill the 10mm hole dead centre which is easy if you use a fence/stop setup on a drill press.

Yeah, those 10mm hinges sure don't leave much in 13mill or 1/2 inch stock. Would be nice if they made a 8.5 mill hinge!

Thanks Corey/ martrix, thinking about it countersinking the hole wouldn,t work without chamfering the edges anyhow. Will go with chamfering the back edges many thanks

Not sure about Iowa, but 8mm brass barrel hinges are readily available in Australia. I use them in 11mm finished stock and they work a treat.

I use them all the time. People seem to love them. They do need a 45* chamfer that is exactly 1/2 the
thickness off the wood. This picture may help.

No kidding, not available that I have seen over here. Are they the type like the 10mm or they like a 5mm where you need to make a chamfer?

Hi Corey, thank you for that it will save me fiddling about working out how big a chamfer to do
