Hi Dengue,
The box was made from 25 mm cedar glued into a U channel that measured 150 wide x 40 high. The stringing slots were then cut 10 mm deep using the table saw. The strips were cut to the same width as the saw kerf (my saw has a 2.1 mm kerf) and then glued in the slots with Titebond. Rather than weaken the lid, the stringing would strengthen the lid. The inside of the U channels was then removed by using the table saw and the router table. The final wall thickness of the lid is about 14 mm.
Here is a picture of how the slots were cut. You have to turn the piece to cut the front and the back so the stop on the cross fence on the table saw must be accurate to get perfect alignment. I was not happy with the result I achieved so I inserted those ugly brass and acrylic plugs to disguise the slight misalignment.

I actually thought the plugs looked great - that they defined the work as Art Deco
Thought you guys might like a pic of an Art Dec movie theatre I discovered in NZ south island. Hokitika is a very interesting place, lots to see. Had our first whitebait pizza there at the world famous Fat Pipi Pizza restaurant

Hi Fletty,
Thanks for your comments on the box.
There was enough misalignment with the parallel inlays to warrant the job going in the scrap bin.It was also compounded because when the lid was rounded over it exposed the inlays to show some end grain and that caused a colour change that was not what I wanted.
Thus, the plugs were inserted to disguise the stuff up.
Art is what the beholder deems it to be and for me, Art Deco was all about symmetry! And my head I'd be a scratchin'
