Art Deco
A while ago I was looking at some Art Deco images and came across a picture of a box that was on an antique auction site. The Art Deco box was Italian and made about 1920 and was to my eye simply elegant. I decided to attempt a similar design but include a wooden hinge of my own design. This box is made from some light coloured cedar and is lined in the base with a red suede leather.
Because the hinge design gives a clean uncluttered look to the rear of the box I decided to repeat it at the front as it also works well for the finger lift. It gives the design some symmetry.
The box measures 240mm wide x 150 mm x 80mm deep.

Totally gorgeous Ruddy!!!
I am a BIG fan of Art Deco and have made sketches and notes for several boxes I intend to make.
I hope to live up to your high standards!!

It could sit on the desk of Hercule Poirot and not be out of place at all. I like it a lot!!! The props in the series make watching Hercule interesting and not just the story line
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

Thanks for all the positive comments. If you get a chance Google images for Art Deco box or better still, Art Deco radio. I am a big fan of things Art Deco from architecture through to furniture (some) and items like radios and boxes.Plenty of inspirational ideas in these Art Deco designs.
One day I hope to make a box along the lines of these images.

Also, here is an image of the original Italian Art Deco box that I used as a starting point for this project. You can see it puts my effort to shame.I did not set out to make an exact copy, rather I like to add my own interpretation to the basic design......I just think the original is so very elegant and long before Steve Jobs came along you can see where the IPhone came from!!!

I normally dislike art deco, but your exquisite box is the exception to the rule

Beautiful piece!
Although, Apple design chief Jonny Ive took his inspiration from Braun designer Dieter Rams, who in the 70s came up with the 10 Priciples of Good Design.

Well done Ruddy, that is very elegant and a beautiful heirloom. Just two questions, how did you do the stringing on the lid? It appears quite deep, but does not come right through the lid. Would it weaken the lid?
regards,
Dengy
