Default Attaching a simple butt hinge

Hi all, Is it just me or do others have problems lining up a simple butt hinge on their boxes. I usually avoid butt hinges do to this factor. It seems simple enough but every time I do it, something is out somewhere. The front of the box and lid isn't just quite right, or the sides are a bit out.

Do others have this problem also,..?

    Regards, Pajl

    Must be you!

Neil Erasmus wrote a very good article on fitting butt hinges a few years ago in Australian Woodworking Review but unfortunately I'm two weeks and a few hundred k's away from my collection; perhaps another forumite can help here with a copy?

I lay the lid in the wide open position so it is at the same level as the base, perfectly square and with the desired gap between them. I then clamp the whole lot down firmly. Lay the hinges in position and scribe around them. Cut the rebates with a router plane or router, then screw the hinges in place. Job done!

If this is something yo do regularly then consider spending the time to build a hinge rebate jig that you can use with an electric router. i built one years ago specifically for 3" brass hinges; all I have to do is plonk it roughly in position, set it a reference distance from a box side and a wooden wedge then clamps it tight. 30 seconds of routing later and move onto the next, perfect result every time.

Thanks for the heads up Chief. By the way, it's not only Pajl, it's me too

I've got the full collection of AWR and if you could point me in the right direction, I'd love to have a look at the article. AWR has an indexes page, if you could click the author tab and tell me which edition it is, that'd be great. I could also help Pajl out with the article.

    Cheers.

You could try Issue 43, page 40 or issue 72, page 48. Listed in the index as Hinges - Fitting.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    As a newbie

I must admit I also screw it up regularly.

Any chance to see what that article said?

Hello HellowFellow. Seeing as I started this thread, I should respond. The article that Scott was kind enough to send to me, even though a good article wasn't really appropriate to small boxes. In the meantime I did find another very good idea/solution somewhere on the net. Now all I need to do is find it again. I should have saved it. Regards, Paul

I like to use the story stick approach as taught by Doug Stowe, an American woodworker and contributor to Fine Woodworking. Use the story stick to set up stops on the router table, route for the hinges with a small diameter straight bit, and clean up the corners with a sharp chisel. Use high quality hinges and Vix bits to ensure pilot holes are actually where they need to be and you should be golden. Best of luck!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
