sandpaper help
Hello,I am in need of experienced opinions. I am seeking a very fine grit sandpaper for final sanding and after finishing with stain. All I have been able to find is black in appearance and I have been told that this may rub off onto my boxes. They are made of birch and so this is not desirable. I know that it can be removed with mineral spirits but does anyone know where I can find 600 grit brownish colored sandpaper to avoid this extra step??? Please help me because 220 just isn't fine enough.
Thank you for your knowledge,
Saaje

Have a look at the Micromesh available from Carrolls

It's the Ducks nuts for fine sanding and Carroll's are great to deal with too!!
(No financial interest..........)
Doesnt seem to shed any colour as well. Just noticed your in CA. Micromesh is made over your way so try local supplier.

Salty is right. Next to 0000 steel wool, Micromesh is the stuff. Available at your nearest Woodcraft store or over the internet. Good luck!
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

I always use 3M brand paper, it lasts longer than anything else Ive tried, is thicker tougher paper, doesn't break down and stain your work or clog.
Theres no short cuts with sanding if you want a good finish in my opinion, you must go through all the grits in steps. eg. I start at about 240 sometimes 180 if I need to remove saw marks then work through 320, 400, then I use 600 wet & dry (the black stuff) to rub in the first coat of Danish Oil. The black stuff is designed to be used with oil or water so it doesn't clog or break down. Each grit takes out the scratches from the previous grit until its polished finally with eee ultra shine then traditional wax after 2 coats of D.O., you can't beat that stuff.
