Default First attempt at box making.

Here's my first go at box making . Since obtaining my new panel saw I thought a keepsake box for SWMBO would be a good project to test the saw's accuracy. I'm happy with the result.

The box is Tiger Myrtle, with Houn top, and Birdseye Huon inners, with 1 x shallow drawer, and Purple Gidgee drawer knob. Oiled and waxed finish.

Very nice box, SWMBO should be very happy. Why did you hide the birdseye inside?

    Wongo - cheers.

nine fingers - thanks. Why put the birdseye inside? The Tiger Myrtle is solid timber, but the top and base are 3mm MDF veneered. Originally I was going to use Huon veneers as I thought the birdseye would be a little TOO much. The Tiger Myrtle really stands out as a feature in it's own right, and I didn't want the whole thing to be too overpowering.

But then I had a few problems with the MDF cupping as the veneers dried (my first attempt at veneering ). I had more Birdseye Huon veneers available than normal Huon so take 2 ended up a bit of each. I thought by putting the Birdseye inside, it'd be a nice surprise when you open the box.

If I were to do it again I'd probably put the Birdseye all round. You live and learn I guess. It was just my first attempt after all. Not bad for a MKI version though I guess.

    WOW.

    briliant first box mate.

when veneering on mdf it helps if you do both sides at once and then clamp it down with a board on top.

when glueing up if you lay grese proof paper or frezer go between down on the bench the glue wont stick to it and you can simply lift it off.

    dont stop now.

thanks guys for all the positive feedback. It's not perfect, but I was happy with it for a 1st attempt.

I have a rocking horse to restore 1st, but then I'm planning on a jewellery cabinet for the mother in law, and will post pics of that when I get around to it. (an no doubt many questions about felting etc as well).

    Hi Timber Nut

I think you're the guy who bought the "Felder" from me. I couldn't remember your handle. Am I right?

Anyway, that's a beautiful first box. First class job.

Hi Jeff. Yep, that's me. Good to see you still on the forums! Hoping you've managed to re-let that unit nice and quick. Are you still doing any woodwork?

Am loving the KF700. What an awesome bit of kit! As you can see from this box, am busy testing how accurate I can get mitres... (what a piece of cake now! (but you knew that, right?!))

I certainly wouldn't consider myself a pro, but that Felder surely IS a bit of pro hardware. (If you find my other thread on the baby's cot I've just made, posted in Woodwork Pics section, you'll see plenty of pics of the Felder, and some very jealous forumites...)

    Hi Ian,

I was sure it was you. Glad you like the Felder. It sure is a beautiful piece of gear. I haven't leased the unit yet. In fact it's up for sale or rent and I haven't had one single enquiry. The commercial property market is a complete write off at the moment.
I've kept an occasional eye on the forum but I'm just now starting to get back into a bit of woodwork, but only in a small way and only with hand tools. As I'm sure I'll be told, I have joined the dark siders.
Keep putting up your work. I really enjoy seeing what forumites are producing.

    Regards
    Jeff
