    Default My first attempts

    Hey all
Just thought i would post a few pics of my first attempts at wood working.
Its a tea box i put together as a present for a friends birthday.
Its all kin dried tasmanian oak finished with french polish/shellac (not sure what the technical term for this is).
Anyway this is the first time I've done anything like this so I am just after any comments or thoughts from seasoned woodworkers?

That's a nice looking box. The box joints fit like a dream and the finish is good too. The simple design is very stately. Well done!

Welcome. You have every right to feel proud of this effort, even if it was not your first project

Actually they appear to fit like a dream but in reality they didn't. I cut the box joints using a router table and somehow when adding up the measurements in my head 2 of the fingers of the jointed ended up half the thickness then they should have. In the end i patched them up using small off cuts of wood. I was actually quite proud of how well i patched up all the mistakes i made in the beginning.

the true test of a woodworker is his ability to fix mistakes not to build sompthing faultlesly
