Very , very nice.
Been a bit scared to use silver ash because of its glue hating thing.

Just planting a seed.

Thanks Jake. Using the spreadsheet, it's no more difficult doing the angles on a tablesaw than it would be doing a normal mitre. The tilt and mitre scales have to be accurate and you don't want any slop in the mitre track, but that's the same as any other mitre. Otherwise, it's just a matter of remembering to tilt the saw and cut the right way.

Nice legs
Hi Alex,
Absolutely great box. I have been looking for a design and this may be it. Can I use it?
How did you attach the legs and what finish did you use?

Thanks Greg,
I guess once a pic has been posted on the web there's nothing to stop anyone making the same design. However, I think you'll find it more satisfying if you use it as the basis for a design of your own. For example, you could make a similar shaped box with different legs, different lid, different timbers, different proportions..... I got the idea for this box from the one on the front cover of "400 Wooden Boxes". Because I sell my boxes and their originality is one of their selling points, I'd obviously prefer it if you didn't do a direct copy (but thanks for having the decency to ask).
The legs are glued on, and the finish is Trad wax over Kunos oil over shellac.

Thanks Alex,
I will respect your wishes.
I have been thinking of a box like that for a while without legs and wondering how to do a lid. Seeing your box with legs and lid put it all together for me.
My box will be different but similar if you know what I mean. (My work is certainly not as good as yours) It may be a few months before I get to it as I have a few family and work commitments over the next few months.

That book is a darn good one. I'm well on my way to trying to wear out my copy, not to copy the pieces in it, but it's great for browsing thru waiting for the spark of an idea to hit and grow.
cheers

Silver Ash
I like the bi timber box.
I am interested in how you managed to maintain the light colour of the Silver Ash?
So far, everything I try turns the Ash to a pine colour.

I first give it a coat of UBeaut white shellac as a sanding sealer. I then use about 4 coats of Kunos oil a day apart, cut 50/50 with bio thinners as a finish, starting with a flood coat and going to progressively lighter coats. The 2nd last coat is applied with 0000 steel wool.

I am happy this thread got resurrected I must have missed it somehow. Excellent work and a great looking project. Certainly one well worthy of all the comments made up to date. Beautiful work and great combination of timbers.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John
