    Question Aussie and Kiwi timbers?

    G'day,

Skipping the full story and getting to the chase, as part of project for a client, they have requested something special in which to present a document, which I will also be designing, to be presented to a potential new business partner.

The client wants something that is relevant to Kiwi's. Given it's for one item only my thought was a presentation box made of an Australian timber and a complimentary New Zealand timber. Which leads to my question.

Which two timbers? The only thing is I need to be able to find the N.Z timber easily from a local source in Melbourne.

    Onya in advance.

Ancient Kauri would have to be that 'special' timber from NZ however can be a tad expensive. I know Bowerbird Timber in Millgrove has a few chunks. It's a creamy/beige sort of timber so if you want something similar in Australia, Huon could be okay or if you want to go opposite, then maybe Jarrah or something like that.

Yes. I thought the same as Scott, but he was about 6 mins quicker than me!

You might like to consider a timber tube for the document if it is something than can be rolled up. This would give it a scroll like appearance, which could be very appealing. Might not be suitable if it is very many pages.

    Hi Waldo,

A couple of timbers which actually look good together are Rimu and Black Hearted Sassafrass. You can't buy NZ Rimu any more but can get Fijian plantation grown from AFT. Careful selection of the Sassafrass would be advised. Danahers Timber and Hardware have a lot of sassy at present, rough sawn.

Here's a little cabinet in Rimu with Sassy panels in the doors and as the back panel.( The little drawer is Kauri!)
Gotta say though, Ancient Kauri and Red Gum, or if you can get it Gidgee would be stunning.

    Regards,

    Rob

What Scott said, can check to see what Bowerbird has left if you like, will be there tomorrow loading up the beep beep and again next week. Another Kiwi timber is Rimu I think, but can be hard to source from what I've heard.

What sizes are you after as I also have some Ancient Kauri here.

I'd probably look at matching Kuari with a darker timber, like Redgum, Sheoak, Jarrah etc
    Cheers

    Thanks for the replies.

I should have mentioned the document will be a bound book, so thus the box. Ancient Kauri and Red Gum sound good. Black h/sassy also gets me thinking too or Gidgee. Always love a trip to drool over timber, and I can't get into trouble for it if a client is paying.

That's be great Dj. Size wise say 30mm or thereabouts each way larger than A4 by say 70mm height - roughly thinking without having given a lot of thought to size.

If you've never been to Bowerbird then drool doesn't describe the place. A treasure trove of timber. All the best with the document box, a picture of the end product would be great

No worries, will see what is there. Think I'm been loaded out the back in the morning but know that I'm bringing logs back in the arvo, so should be able to chat with Tim then.

    Thanks Ruddy.

Noah could've made the ark with that and I don't think it'll fit in the overhead luggage Dj. I thought you're the bloke on the right, at least he's better looking in a rugged way.
