    Default Some beautiful Queensland Maple.

This box and tray is from Queensland Maple that came from Greg Ward. It was from an ugly Y shaped crotch that allowed me to salvage some boards that I hoped would be put to good use.
The box measures 279 mm x 180 mm x 90 mm high and all faces have a slight curve.
The insert in the lid is Jarrah burl and all the highlights are from red acrylic.
This is the second box I have used this technique to make the tray. As always , I learnt a few things after making the earlier tray shown in the previous post and this is a better result. I made sure the grain on the ends of the tray ran long so the tray is much stronger. I also set the scroll saw to about 8 degrees when cutting out the shapes as this gives greater room to trap the foam and suede leather inner lining

And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

    Thumbs up

That QM has grain that is remarkably like some Toona Ciliata that I have stashed away.

Yes, very nice. You'll have to let us know how you do those miter pins. Great work

Very sweet craftsmanship, beautiful timber, set off with that great complimentary acrylic detail. Yes the mitre pins look unusual - nice touch.

Scott.. The round dots at the end of each mitre are just decorative. I drill a hole about 8 mm deep at the end of each mitre and glue in a turned piece of acrylic, then sand off.
ClintO....I cut three 10mm strips of burl from a piece old jarrah I had that was about 50mm square x 200 long. I used double sided tape and overlapped the strips on scrap piece of ply, drew the curved lines and then cut through on the bandsaw.
I then used an epoxy glue and glued these onto a piece of 3mm ply with the acrylic strips in between. I routed the pocket in the lid about 10mm deep and then cut the glued burl assembly to the size of the pocket so it was a neat drop in fit.
This was glued in with Titebond and at this stage the burl was standing about 3 mm proud of the lid. When set, the excess was removed with a plane before final sanding to get the curved top. I used a 3 corner file to create the defining line between the insert and the lid. The final thickness of the jarrah would be about 7 to 8 mm.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
