    Default Some beautiful Rosewood.

A few years ago I purchased some Rosewood from Greg Ward and with this Corvid-19 interruption I decided it was time to convert it from a very rough slab to a simple box. The grain was very cranky and getting it into sized boards to make a box took some careful thicknessing and sanding. The boards had a few unavoidable surface cracks but that just adds to the beauty of the Rosewood.
The box measures 290 mm x 180 mm x 100 mm high and has been finished with a low sheen WOP. The base of the box is lined with a grey/green pigskin suede. I may add a compartment tray at a later date.
The quilted lid pattern was made using a Carbitool Half Core Box bit and the hinge pins are 3 mm brass rod.

So smooth and curvaceous. You have certainly tamed that cranky wood beautifully. It looks like the lock down has had at least one beneficial side effect.

Something different! As Dallas said, the grain may have been cranky, but you've certainly tamed it. Very innovative treatment of the lid.

I'm pretty confident you've mitred the sides, fitted the keys and then rounded off the outside, but how did you do the inside?

A beautiful box with a well thought out design. Rosewood has to be one of the nicest looking timbers.

Well done Ruddy, especially the way the lid is nested into the front as well as the sides - and the lift tab part of the lid rather than an attachment

I wish I could make a box like that. WOW!! It is just beautiful and very difficult to make.

Hi Ruddy, very nice box, I like the round corners. I've certainly bought a fair bit of that Rosewood from Mal and Greg over the last few years. Their property is a real eye opener, I call it Timber Heaven, you have never seen so much timber in your life as what they have down there.

Thank you all for your comments.
The boards to make this box were all finished to 13 mm thick and then the box was constructed in the usual manner with mitred corners and corner keys added.
The inside was then machined to give the lid recess a depth of 13mm and that leaves the very aesthetic 6mm edge to the top of the box. The rear of the lid recess is then deepened to allow the lid to swing and the corners are also modified to act as a stop when the lid is opened. It is critical to select the correct point for the hinge hole that goes through the carcass and the lid.
The lid was then fitted to the lid recess and all corners rounded to the correct radius.
When the lid is closed you get the impression the wall thickness of the box is only 6 mm and the rounded shape makes it very tactile.

    Hi Ruddy,
How many years did that piece take to hatch? You've been watching that timber for quite a while, hope you've got some other good cranky bits to play with as well. Let me know if you'd like any more, I still drop timber to Cremorne, although it is monthly now rather than every 12 days
    Wonderful work as usual.
    Regards
    Greg

Thanks for that explanation Ruddy, you really had me scratching my head trying to work out how you achieved that look. There's little enough hair left on my head as it is so tidying up that conundrum in a timely manner was of paramount importance.
