    Default U-Beauty !!

I have just completed a couple of really nice NG Rosewood & Red Tulip Oak box's, and thought I would try the finishing technique I saw Neil (U-Beaut) demonstrating at the Brisbane Wood Show. I sanded all surfaces to 1200 then spent a little while hand rubbing tripple E past till the timber absolutley shon, then wiped off with a clean flanelette cloth, then applied U-Beaut Traditional Wax to all surfaces. I hand rubbed the interior of the box's and used a Swans-down buffing pad on all external surfaces. ...... Holy COW, what an amazing flawless finish. All surfaces are soooo smooth that the box's are hard to hold as they just slip out of your grasp. The finish is most definatley not a plastiky shiney surface, but a wonderfull natural 'Close To The Wood' semi gloss finish, which really doe's justice to the timber used. I probably spent around 2 hours per box, fine sanding & tripple EEEing and making sure everything was perfect, and I can tell you, it was really worth the effort !!!!!. I just have to get some good quality hinges, & I'll post some pics on the 'Box Making' forum. Thanks so much Neil, for taking my woodworking efforts from good to excellent !!. See you next year in Brisbane at the next WWW show.

that feel on the finish, that's the one I aim for and when I achieve, it is such a satisfying moment. So good to hear about your success story!

OK, just finished off these two box's, and very happy with them as they are only my second attempt at box making. The lid & base are Red Tulip Oak, & sides are PNG Rosewood.

G'day Wendy. Red Tulip Oak is always terrific to work with. It's a very heavy & fairly dense wood, often used on interior stair treads ect and can take a lot of wear. I have'nt tried it on pen turning yet, but I will ASAP.
