Smile Bentwood box, the start of another journey

Having been inspired by Robson Valley's thread on Bentwood Boxes and after some research with the help of RufflyRustic I have embarked on another journey of experimentation. I recently slabbed a log of reasonably wet "yellow jacaranda" to roughly 600x170x30mm and as I had another project on the go I wrapped it in cling wrap and set it aside.
I am now ready to proceed and i will let the photos tell the story on the WIP. The next step is to bandsaw the profile and as I am limited to a maximum length of 390 mm for steaming in the microwave, that has limited the size and it will only have two bent corners instead of the traditional 3.

And my head I'd be a scratchin'

Good thing the couch has wheels as it gets a lot of use around here, what with the stream of great WIPs . Looking very interesting kcam!

Fantastic! I got as far as splitting out some western red cedar slabs but the box work got derailed by two other projects and, it's time to dig the garden and get some things planted.
There seemed to be general agreement in the references and from box-makers quoted by Susan Davidson, that the kerf, undercut and rounded off on one side, works the best. I just hope that my woodworking skills are up to the challenge of doing a good job in the joints.

RV, my first effort will be a straight mitre cut on the sliding mitre saw leaving about 3mm to bend (might get to it today) cheers

Managed to grab some spare time in the workshop early and progressed to the next stage before other activities click in, marked and cut out the profile.

So you aren't going to get "tricky" with the corners, just a simple 'V'?
I think I'll practice on a short bit to see what the fancy kerf corner involves.
Bent wood/kerf-bent boxes have been made by the thousands. Fine.
The theory is out there. Fine. It is rare to see the "process."
    Thanks for all the pictures.

K.I.S.S. How true. I don't suppose that either you or I will be cooking in these boxes or using them to store salmon egg oil over the winter!
(YUK!) The very act of building one gives you a quality of stature here.

TTIT, it's good to work with wet and dry, but the borers love the sap wood, the pieces that I cut up have not been attacked but my mates lot was attacked within a few days and he had it stored in his shed.....as you can see from the pics the closer you get to the heart wood the darker and denser it gets almost like what I knew as raintree in FNQ.....off to do some microwave steaming and hope that it works out...Kerry

    Angry

I have had a severe case of Mondayitis, nothing has gone as planned (in the workshop anyway), first I got the grain pattern upside down, then my mitre kerf did not fold to 90 degrees and in amongst it I used a slightly oversize drill bit to drill for barrel hinges on another "drifting sand" box that I am making as a gift, plugged and re-drilled with reasonable success but left the bentwood for another day.....here are the pics....hopefully I will be able to correct....but I think that I will stick to mitred or dovetails in future, worth the experiment though. Will continue the post even if it is a total failure. KC
