Hi Rattrap ,
Sorry I do not have pics during construction but here goes .The frame of my lid was 12mm thick , and i cut slots in the miters of the lid frame and for the raised lid with a 3mm slotting bit using a miter sled . I use the word "sled" loosely. The slots were 8mm deep
Starting with a piece of wenge 16mmx,.20mm , I used my router table to progressively cut 4 rebates in the wenge to make a cruciform ,making the wings on the cruciform 8mmx3mm and then cut that into 4 lengths.
I then made 2 pieces shown in the drawing below to allow me to clamp the cruciform while i made miter cuts using my Japanese saw which has a blade without any set on the teeth . The cruciforms required a bit of sanding and fine tuning to get the fit right.I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Not only is the wood impressive, but the lid corners, and the shaped body corners are mightily good!!
I'll add to the chorus of no handle...
