is that a 1 piece lid or segmented strips?

that is one solid piece of recycled Northern Silky Oak, Fumbler. It was 16mm thick with a couple of nicks, and I planed it down to 14mm for this job. It is a floating lid sitting in 4 mm slot near the top of box sides

Quite easy if you have a router table, same settings as for the SmartHinge when doing the two striker plates, but you need a long 6mm bit for the lock mortice to cut a 25mm deep cavity

Forgot to mention that before I installed the escutcheon, I taped up the outside face with Sellotape, and then ran some CA (Superglue) around the edges of the keyhole to strengthen it against wear and tear over the years. Seemed to be absorbed quite well

Many thanks for the photos of the brolgas, ian, but for engraving, the operator requires a simple outline drawing like a pencil drawing or one like the first one you showed, but without all the fine detail of the reeds and feathers etc

Hi John.G, nice to hear from you. It actually worked out at 26 days after being given notice. Just the same, it is the fastest box I have ever made. I normally take several months. This one was also quite stressful, with the heatwave during glue-up and everything going wrong, the SmartLock going missing in Aust Post, suspect it was delivered to the wrong address, but it eventually turned up unexpectedly, and then all the rain from cyclone Owen after it turned into a tropical depression when I wanted to apply the finish. There was all the uncertainly and delay about the escutcheon, never having fitted one before. I was so relieved when it all worked out well in the end, and met the deadline.
