    Default Black walnut box

Just some poor cell phone photographs.

Very much like my last box only black walnut this time. Dimensions are 318 x 172 x 95. Stock was planed to 15 mm.

Gaboon ebony lift. Brusso hinges. Finish is three coats of Bush oil and two coats of paste wax. I had a lot of fun building this one. Hope you like it.

Very nice looking box The colour is not what I would have expected for Walnut but that could be your phone I expect.

I'm currently tossing up a design for some more boxes and your lid leaves me with the question - are they 'breadboard' ends or glued solidly in place??

The colour is actually pretty true. As is the curl that you can see. Not all black walnut will have the curl, but sometimes one just gets lucky. Living on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. I get to work with a lot of nice black walnut. A great deal of it comes out of New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Certain finishes may darken it more, but I find that the Bush oil accentuates the timber without unduly changing the colour. I would have preferred to have taken these shots outdoors for better light, but we are in our second day of rain here.

As for the lid, the ends are glued solidly in place. I used to do the breadboard ends, but gave them up as unnecessary steps essentially without value. At only 305mm x 172mm, I just don't feel that the lid moves that much to be an issue. I have had one of these sitting on top of my dresser for three years now with no issues. Were this a blanket chest I would feel differently.
