Blackwood document box
Had some beautiful blackwood that the client liked, and she wanted a feature in the lid panel, so I used coast banksia veneers. The liner is Qld maple and the finish is Kunos oil over a white shellac sanding sealer. Corners are hand cut dovetails.

Beautiful box Alex, your exemplary skills and workmanship shine on.
Although beautifully made, I think the top lets the piece down a bit. Lovely timber in its own right, but I would have carried on with the blackwood, and made a raised top with some sort of decorative chamfer around the edge, thus taking the eye away from the top corners - beautifully mated tho they are.
Feel a bit uncomfortable saying this, but if one's not honest, not much point in feedback.Bodgy

Thanks for the kind words. I think in this case, most of the credit is due to the wood.
It is indeed Tony. Thanks for the referral. Mr. G picked it up this evening.
Bodgy, don't feel uncomfortable, that's what feedback's for. There was quite a bit of discussion with the customer, who really liked the banksia. I thought about a raised panel, but because of the size of the banksia, the border all round it would have looked too big. It looked better IMHO with b'wood border top & bottom, and just the box sides.
