The book box
This box has been floating around the workshop in a half finished state for about 12 months. I have been trying to work out a better hinge method. I wanted to hinge the front cover like a normal book, but in desperation I split it horizontally and used square backed brass hinges. Because of the curved back the hinges are too prominent. The box is made from Australian walnut and American walnut burl veneer. The banding, I made from black bean and silver ash. The box measures 190mm x 260mm and is 60mm deep. Feel free to comment.
Jim

It truly looks magnificent!
I love the inlay on the inside "lid" too. Are they magnets on the inside to keep the cover closed? If so, which ones are they and from where did you get them?
Well done and hope to see more of your skill.
Phil"Come sit down beside me" I said to myself, and although it didn't make sense,
I held my own hand as a small sign of trust, and together I sat on the fence.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
Hi Phil, yes they are rare earth magnets. I tried 5mm magnets but they were too weak, these are 8mm. Jim Carroll has them. I made the inlayed piece in the lid, but they can can be bought.
Yes Ray I agree about the hinges, but I can't find the barrell hinges that open 90 degrees rather than 180. As well the curved back did present some problems. I do have another idea to solve the problem. Maybe on the next one.

Very nice. I think the hinges you used look better than barrel hinges, Did you consider using SmartHinges?

Agree with Alex about the hinges on this box, they look neat - nice and simple and clean lines.
With regards to SmartHinges, can you buy them locally, or do you have to import this Australian invention?regards,
Dengy

Hi, all - Andrew Crawford here, co-designer of the smartHinge. Love the book box, Jim, but I have to agree about the hinges.
Firstly, just to set the record straight, sorry, smartHinge is not an Australian invention. It was developed by me [English] in collaboration with Clive Jarman [also English but living and working in Perth, WA] as a result of a meeting when I was artist and residence at the Perth Woodshow in August 2010.
This hinge has become so popular now that we've had to move production to UK. As a result it's now 25% cheaper than it was, selling now for £29.95, or around $46 AUD. For more info go here and to buy go here. The new UK produced version will be available from the end of October.
Happy box making!
AC.

That is a very fine box indeed. I like the way you have done the hinges.
TTIT made a box recently and showed it on this forum and he made some stunning wooden hinges. I
think an adaption of wooden hinge design could work very well with this book design. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
