    Default Another First Box

    Hi box people

I've just finished making the jewellery box in the attached pics as a Christmas present for my Mum - nothing like leaving it to the last minute.

I've had a Roger Gifkins dovetail jig for a couple of years, and I've played with it a bit, but this is the first box I've actually finished.

The dovetailing was easy - I need some more practice at the detail joinery (don't look too hard at the fit of the lid or the hinges).

The box sides are from Rose Gum and the top is Camphor Laurel, all from the WWW show in Sydney. It's finished with Organoil Danish Oil.

And just because I can, I've also attached a picture of the most recent pepper mill I've made (about number 50 I think), which is also destined to be a Christmas present. It's also Camphor Laurel, it's about 300mm high and 65mm dia and uses the standard Danish mill mechanism. It is finished with UBeaut EEE and Shellawax Gold (great stuff!).

    cheers, Colin

Very nice presents. Sure to be a hit this Christmas. I'll bet your shop smelled nice after turning all that camphor laurel!

Thank you everyone for your supportive comments. As usual, we know where the faults are in the things we make, but if we don't point them out other people either don't see them (or are too polite to say anything).

Mum was very happy to receive the jewelry box, but then she's my Mum, and she thinks everything I make is wonderful.

    cheers, Colin

...and why wouldn't she be happy with a box with that stunning top panel?! Very nice! Am envious! Well done!

What was your technique for lining the sides inside the box, please? Is that felt glued to a thin piece of MDF or similar, please?

    Hi Charleville

    Thanks for the compliments.

It is lined with craft felt from the local $2 shop. The felt is glued directly to the inside of the box base, sides and lid, with a spray adhesive. The felt is probably about 1mm thick.

When I oiled the box I only applied the oil no more than 10mm down the insides and ends of the box body. I cut the strips for the sides and ends about 5mm narrower than the height of the box to leave a narrow edge of oiled wood above the felt.

You've got to be careful not to stretch the felt as you lay it onto the wood, otherwise you get too much at the end. Also, next time I do it, I'll make sure I clean my fingers between each piece of felt - the glue on my fingers was sticking to the glue on the felt, making it hard to get the last piece in cleanly.

There is always something to learn.

    cheers, Colin
