Box #2 - Huon Pine & Myrtle.
Copied this of Wardy's Two Year box, (hope he doesn't mind, it makes his look alot better anyway)
Hasn't been finished yet, but decided to post it up, any tips on what to put on it in means of finishing would be very arpeciated,
Learnt a few new things while doing it, such as the curv in the lid to act as a finger hole.
Hope you like it, all comments apreciated!
Alex.

Alex I don't mind at all. Fine looking box mate. May I suggest for the finish, 1/3 satin poly 1/3 boiled linseed oil and 1/3 mineral turps. Place in glass jar and give the mixture a good shake.Either use a brush or an old clean singlet. This type of finish is very forgiving.Brush a liberal amount onto surface and let sit for approx 10 mins then wipe off excess, wiping with the grain.Let dry for 24 hrs, sand lightly between coats. Do as many coats as necessary till required look is achieved.Finish off with a wax of your choice.
cheers

Nice box Alex. I really like shellac & then wax for finishes on my boxes at the moment.
1 thing tho, that huon pine looks alot more like regular pine than huon. Huon pine usually has much finer grain.

Many thanks to Wardy as today I bought the ingredients he listed to make his finish, worked superbly, looks fantastic, very much apreciated!
Highly recomend it, brings out the grain and colours very nicely and easy to apply.
Once again, thanks!
Alex.

Brad was a fool to leave Jen.
That said, it's a very nice box. I like the contrast between the timbers, The poly/oil/thinner mix is a popular one and is sold under many brand names already mixed up. I believe Sam Maloof's formula is based on this combination as is Arm-R-Seal from General Finishes. Looking forward to seeing new photos after finishing. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Think RATTRAP is on the money - not Huon, could be King Billy or Macrocarpa Pine though.
Nice looking box Alex, I love the contrast in the trims. Sets it off very nicely.
I'd be getting the finish on it soon. The movement of the unfinished myrtle can be a pain in the bum.

Huons have been protected for years now, they can only cut up fallen trees. But a tourist opperator down Strhan way where alot of it comes from told me that the State had round 90 yrs worth stockpiled still.
