OK, I am already getting naughty design changes already, found a bit of American Ash laying on the table saw from last year so after going into WS at 9.30 and taking over 90 minutes to get things straight in the workshop I got this far.

I cut a longitude saw cut twice and then I intend to clean the rebate out with a 12mm rouuter bit. I have found some Purple heart which will be used for the intarsia effect.

So after lunch I went back out to the WS instead of having my usual siesta.

Lovely weather, (and I thought the season was ready to go this morning)

Cut out the waste of the rebates (dadoes) with router on table.

And then made my first mistake of the season. I omitted to do the vertical rebates and glued the outside horizontal contrast colours before doing those vertical rebates.

At my age I shall have to start making a progress instruction sheet to keep me on track in future.

Not a disaster but box is going to turn out a different pattern than

rebated the rear side of carcass pieces, hoping to avoid any twist occurring, and inserted purple heart decorative strips each side to balance.

Might get a whole day in the WS today, household duties light, and weather off putting for gardening work.

For those members who have not seen the jig I use to make the mitred corners, showing again.

I use three lots of hand clamps to make sure timber does not get moved by the blade and also one clamp acts as a stop as well.

I then glue up the carcass but never use clamps just masking tape, I find it goes together square more easily, clamps can pull the box out of shape.

    close up of taping method

carcass folded up and corners form perfectly and tape closed up

Prepared strips for the box lid and glued ready to make aperture.

John, good looking box. Reminds me that I have a little board of Purpleheart in the wood shed (12"x 1" x 50"+) . . .

Progress delayed this morning, dandylions growing, and then I saw a neighbour in his garden and had a chat, then got him to come into my workshop and help me manoeuvre that bit of sycamore I purchased this week (1.6cu.ft.lump) through the bandsaw, took off a 4" width ready for some action later this coming week.

Well done with the box John.

Your weather still looks a bit ordinary.

    Looking good.

Your jig for mitre cuts looks like it rides quite high on the table saw. Is there a reason why it needs to do that, or did it just turn out that way?

Even if I had thought to put my glue up on the stove to dry... wait!
I wonder if SWMBO would allow me to do that?

I'l try that and simply say that I saw it on the forum.

Great WIP Woody, I look forward to the completion! I must say your glue up board is a great idea I will be building one for myself ASAP, so easy to set up odd shaped pieces. I assume you sand out drill holes regularly.
    Thanks for the insight.

AJW, I designed it that way hopefully for safety reasons, hands are quite away from the blade, if referring to blade height it cuts better that way for me.
BB, yes the holes are sanded after every glue up, and the board an ex science room cupboard door of the 50's will turn over and service again.

    Interesting day yesterday,
Some progress on the box, the lid has now been cut for its aperture and then glued but will have to now wait for edges to be rounded over plus rebating edges to drop on top of carcass.

Couple of neighbours also called in as mentioned but we cut off the top crust of this newly baked loaf (made by misses) and had a feast.

Finally that weather returned again in the afternoon.

See you again soon I hope.
