    Default My first box

    Hi Guys/Girls,
I finally managed to complete a presentable box. I had posted earlier asking about box proportions as my first attempts just didn't look right but after some great advice from you all, I've done it. It's made of Tassie Oak with teak splines in the corners. I was really happy with the mitres - I've been working on those for a while )
Now I'm headed in the right direction, I've got lots of ideas for others. I used this style of lift-off lid as hinges scare the hell out of me at the moment.

    What do you reckon?

Anyone who can come up with mitres like those is beyond the beginner stage. It would have been a good idea to have mitre keys in the lid though, or have you fitted hidden mitre splines? Nice box, I can see many more in your future.

Looks good. Nice and clean, uncluttered. I would be proud of that effort. I hope you are.

I think hinges scare most woodworkers before they get some special tools. I put most of my hinges on with a palm router and a jig. The router bit I use is bearing guided so cuts the shape determined by the jig. Then the corners need to be squared to accept the rectangular hinge leaves.

Looks like you didn't need to hesitate on making that box as it's come out very nicely. Really like the gum veins in the lid panel and as aldav says, the mitres are spot on.
Look forward to seeing more of your boxes.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Talking about hinges, where can I purchase reasonably priced hardware? I don't seem to be able to find something between "cheap & nasty" and "OH MY GOD".
At this stage I do like the siderail type hinge as they seem relatively easy to install. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks ALDAV. Yes, even the "boss" noticed that I should have fitted a key in the lid. Next time )

For everyday butt hinges that are pretty good and cheap I've been buying through eBay from East Gippsland Saw Service. Their eBay name is johnnyd0_11. They also have little brass screws.

For better hinges I've been buying through Gerner Hinges: Brass Hinges - Gerner Hinges

    Thanks Homesy,
I’ve ordered a couple of pairs of butt hinges from Gerner. I’ll see how I go. A pity they don’t have side rail hinges.
I’ll keep you posted on my progress (or not)

What is their shipping cost like? The butt hinges do look quite nice for that price so I will be interested to hear your opinion of them when they arrive.

The shipping cost for two pair of hinges was $10.00.
I’ll post a review on them when they arrive.

A lot of box makers look for stop hinges, that's the only problem with the Gerner offering - they aren't.

So, does anyone have a source of stop hinges that don't break the bank? I'm more interested in stopped butt hinges rather than those thin side mounted hinges Ian Hawthorne uses. I've used Brusso in the past but don't like mounting the hinge with the knuckle so proud.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack Luckyb's thread.

Go for it homesy. I'm learning something all the time here. I agree with the comment about the knuckle being so prominent. There must be something better. Let's all put our thinking caps on . Maybe overseas?

    G'day homesy,
Could you tell me more about the jig & bit you use. Maybe I could message PM you?

I think it best to show it here for all to see and learn from.
