Default First Box Build - for an Archery Arm Guard

    Hi All,

My first real woodworking build (other than the chicken coop that was made from pine and old fence palings) was a box for my best mate who is more like a brother.

His 40th was during lockdown and we couldn't think of what to get him. We ended up having a custom leather Archery Arm Guard commissioned so naturally i needed to make a box for it!!

I had a couple of pallets sitting around so stripped them down, ran them through Dad's thicknesser, and made a lot of mess.

Everything was very new to me, and hit up the local hardware store way too many times but mainly for tools

The lid was where i was most apprehensive but most excited too. Made it nice and rounded and then carved his initials into it. I have started carving my own fishing lures with my sons lately so wanted to use my newly found skills.

Anyways, enough of my jabbering, here are some photos.

Congratulations! You've turned the proverbial sow's ear into a silk purse.
That's a very nice bit of work showing a good mix of skills, and getting that result with radiata pine is a real achievement. Well done.

Very nice job on the box. It looks like the finger joints came out well having to cut them manually instead of using a jig.
Do you have any photos of the completed box or is it still in progress? Always good to have a project that requires new tools

I have photos of the completed project however i couldn't post them last night due to restrictions on my account, which is all good now.

I will post more photos when i get home from work.

I ended up cutting the finger joints on the scroll saw, i wish i had a band saw but don't have any room whilst the boat is still being build... don't have a table saw either which makes things difficult. Both will be bought once the boat is complete and i have a huge chunk of my shed back.

Ha! I was admiring how you did the lid on your box and thinking you might be a good wood strip boat builder.
So how about starting a thread in the wood boat forum. I'm sure others would be interested as well.

The lid strips were not done the most efficient way... all on a slide compound mitre saw... i desperately need/want a table saw.

And yes i will post my boat build in the boat section, just need the time to sort it out as i have crazy amounts of photos.

Here are the rest of the photos as promised

So now i'm on to the next project (other than the boat).
A larger box, roughly 590x400x315, with a lid, hidden draw, and hidden internal compartments secured by hidden locking mechs...

    wish me luck....
