    Default Some Hexagonal Boxes

I've made a few hexagonal boxes over the last two or three years (Photos 1 to 4), so when ajw and AlexS recently discussed a hexagonal box incorporating a geometric design, I was very interested. I decided to have a go, using techniques from my previous boxes and incorporating the design into the lid.
(Photos 5 to 8 show the result).

All angles were cut on my trusty, dusty Kapex, The lining which ensures that the lid closes properly each time was attached to the sides with small pieces of double sided tape and cut at the same time as the sides. (Photo 9). The lining was removed before the box was assembled. After the lid was cut off on the table-saw, the lining was cut to the correct height, rounded over and then re-inserted.

The strips for the lid panels were sandwiched together with some sacrificial mdf to ensure clean cuts. Setting up the stop on the scms involved using a digital caliper and some trial cuts, but once set up cutting the panels was straight forward, and fortunately the design came together OK.

The finish is danish oil and trad wax. My thanks to ajw and AlexS.

Beautiful work Bilby, love the contrasting timbers and the inlays, very precise craftmanship..is that silver ash or jacaranda used for the lining?

The boxes were made from Southern Myrtle. The top panels are Southern Myrtle, Jarrah and Silver Ash. The linings are also Silver Ash
