Box Challenge - 2011 - Conditions of Entry
Our Box Challenge of 2011 - 1 July to 28 August 2011
1. You can enter up to three boxes. One box per category, or three boxes in one category, or any other mix, it doesn't matter. (Categories below this numbered list)
2. Boxes can be built, turned, scrolled, carved, bandsawn etc
3. Boxes do not have to be built within the timeframe of the competition, but this is preferred
4. Boxes entered must not have won a prize in any competition wherever that competition was held
5. Boxes entered must not have been previously entered in a Woodworking Australia's Woodwork Forums box challenge
6. Photos of boxes must not have been previously published, whether here, eg Boxes thread, or your blog or your Album, in a book or magazine, or in any other internet forum or home page, or shown in an Art Show/Gallery.
7. Boxes must be 100% your own work, e.g. you put it together, did the joinery, sized the timber, applied the finish and any decoration etc
8. Please Note: If you blog your entry, post pictures of your entry anywhere, or identify your work before the voting closes, you will be disqualified.
9. Keep an eye on this Thread as I will post any Box Challenge updates and announcements here.
Now for the twist:- One box to have wooden hinges and/or latch/catch/handle (eg wooden hinges only or wooden hinges plus latch/catch/handle or just a latch/catch/handle)
- One box to include a Found Object (explanation of 'Found Object' at the bottom of this post)
- One box to be anything you like.
Submissions:
All entries must be sent via email to RufflyRustic by 6 pm Sunday, 28 August 2011 . I'll send the details to all entrants a little closer to the submission date and publish them here too.
Please send in 4 photos of your each project. All pictures must be sent via email to RufflyRustic on or before the finishing time and date, 6 pm Sunday, 28 August 2011.
Photo 1 - Box closed
Photo 2 - Box open
Photo 3 - any view of the box with something to show perspective, eg a matchbox
Photo 4 - a clear closeup of a particularly neat feature of your box or a WIP photo
Photos sent must meet the same criteria as the Forum Photo standards as this will make it easier for you to send in your submission and for us to create the photo vote thread.
Judging:
Judging will be in two parts.
- Part One will be an average score derived from the input of three anonymous Judges. Judges' results will not be published, but I will send individuals their totalled judging results.
- Part Two will be from the results of an anonymous poll on the forums, this keeps it nice, easy, clean and fair. Poll results will be kept hidden.
- The poll will be open from the day the photo thread is up and will close at 6pm on the following Sunday, 4 September 2011 .
- In the event of a draw, the final decision will be made by forum administrators Ubeaut and , both of whom have judged at national level.
Found Objection Definition
A Found Object - something that is not a store-bought hinge, handle or latch/catch/lock and is not of the same material as the timber in the box. An object that you can use in the box in a non-standard way for that object. The aim is to try to use it as you came across it so that it is still recognisable. Finding a piece of timber in the wild and then dressing it means it is unrecognisable as compared to when you first saw it and picked it up and it is no longer a Found Object.
Using the hand Springwater found purely as a hypothetical example, you could incorporate that into the box as a handle on the front, or (sacriledge!!) cut it in half so you have half the hand on either side of the box for handles. Cutting it in half is fine, because it is still recognisable as to what it was originally.
If you are unsure, feel free to PM me to keep your Found Object question private.
Disclosure:
I am entering the Box Challenge. However, because I am also running the Challenge, I do not get to vote because I will know which boxes are entered by which entrant.
If you object to me participating, please let me know before 6pm Sunday, 28 August 2011. If anyone objects after the closing date of the competition, sorry, too late.

Submission Details for the Box Challenge of 2011.
Submissions are via email to:
[email protected] or [email protected]
For each box you are entering, please include:
1. Your Forum Name,
2. Which Twist the box is competing in,
3. The four photos described below, and
4. A short description of your box, eg, timber, finish, size, purpose, etc.
To make it easier, could you please send a separate email for each box being entered.
The Twists:
1. One box to have wooden hinges and/or latch/catch/handle (eg wooden hinges only or wooden hinges plus latch/catch/handle or just a latch/catch/handle)
2. One box to include a Found Object (explanation of 'Found Object' at the bottom of this post)
3. One box to be anything you like.
All entries must be sent via email to RufflyRustic on or before the finishing time and date, 6 pm Sunday, 28 August 2011.
If you have any questions about the photos, need help in resizing them or
anything else, just ask.
One Hint - Please don't get too close to the project when taking a picture
as sometimes the picture comes out fuzzy. It's better to stand back a
little, the clearer the picture is, the better for everyone as sometimes,
challenges such as these that depend on pictures can be won or lost on a
fuzzy photo.
Thanks & Good Luck!
Wendy
The entry threads are now posted and stuck in the Box Making Forum.
Enjoy!!!!!

Wendy, this will be the biggest challenge here. So do you reckon you can tell to the boss and maybe he can throw in a few tubs of wax and shellac (or even use the prizes from the monthly draw) to encourage the winners? Just an idea.
