Box Challenge
Here's my idea; Ya'll get sent a length of Silky or Camphor (which I can get from work) or some other timber and you have to make a box. Points for creativity and originality.
Whaddya think?

Sounds like a great idea FC.....I would definitely consider entering
Silky makes me spotty and itchy so Camphor would be the go.
Would it have to be a board or would some square spindle turning blank sizes (50 x 50mm or 75 x 75mm) be available for turned boxes ?
Points for creativity and originality.
cheers

Ah good feedback
I'm thinking a 30" or so x 5" x 3/4" board each. The width and depth would be determined by what we have at work. Would 30" long be enough?
I reckon Mr Jow104 would be a good judge. Considering how many boxes he makes.
And maybe we could rope in a professional....Chris Vesper occasionly breezes the forums...
We also might have some nice (dry) hardwood at work. We'll see..

My tendency is to aim for a 9" longest side so thirty inches if no wastage I always find suitable.
However you wont get a lid surface working with that amount of timber?
I naturally wont be available to participate owing to location.
I would correct myself, a lid is possible.Last edited by jow104; 18th June 2008 at 11:39 PM. Reason: did some calculations

I quite like the idea of a vote to pick a winner, personally.
Camphor or silky is a good idea.Box Challenge 2011 - Check out the amazing Boxes!

Okay this idea is go!
Only thing to decide is which timber to use. Camphor, Silky or a hardwood (I'm eyeing off some pieces at work that might be Sydeny Blue Gum or River Red Gum or something)
The hardwood definitely won't be as easy to work so the softer timbers might be better for beginners and those without fancy machinery (me).
For Judging how about an opinion poll and a professional opinion. Ie. A poll is started like the last challenge and the entries are also shown to two judges who will give a comment as well as points. The points from the poll and the judges are pooled (50/50) and the winners are picked.
Undergestumble?
Okay, let's start this thing!

That's no excuse
So far for timber choice people are not wanting silky oak. And since Camphor will be alot easier to work than hardwood, I'm choosing it.
Any ideas about postage? Payment?
Closing time for entries will be when I have the timber, somewhere around the 25th.
