    Default Box with drawers

Here area couple of designs I have been trying out. I actually used SketchUp first to clarify the concept and get some drawings that helped in the thinking process.
The first box is made with quilted maple veneer on a 9mm marine ply substrate. The Asian style stand and drawer ends are New Guinea Rosewood and the drawers are lined with a red pigskin suede.
The second box is a slightly different concept that reveals a full length tray when the drawers are opened. This box is made from a solid Fiji hardwood and the drawer ends are a eucalyptus burl. This style lends itself to include a removeable half length/half depth tray with partitions for small items.
The boxes are about 450mm long x 160 mm wide.

I really like that design. It's an excellent centre piece for a display.

The quilted maple is marvellous. May I ask where you obtained it from?

It's always nice to see some different ideas. Congrats on developing the style, very nice work. What would you think of covering the exposed ply ends (when the box is open) on the quilted maple box with a contrasting timber? The same timber as the ends could be used perhaps?

I like the concept the added base gives lift and sets it off well, not much to say about the material it is stunning so all round nice pieces you must be pleased with the outcome.

    Thanks for the positive comments.
Aldav, Thank you for your comments. My design preference was to try and present the quilted maple piece as one piece. I understand the visual issue with the end grain of ply but I chose to accept that because the box is primarily viewed when closed. I just prefer the continuous look where the joints are hardly visible because the grain is hardly interrupted..

These are really spectacular designs, and I love the timbers you've used and the way you've made them.

Very interesting design and well executed - they look great Plenty of scope in the designs for a secret compartment or two as well - I'll put that one in the memory bank for later

    Wood pixel.
Someone who had been into marquetry had some excess veneer and the quilted maple was part of that stash. It was a stunning piece of veneer.

Lovely work Ruddy. I have seen a similar design and had made a sketch of it for a future make.

    Hi Double d,
    Thanks for the comments.
I have a few versions on SketchUp if you want them. They are ideal if you want to fiddle about with different dimensions and see how they look in 3D mode.
