I am not sure how that was done, but this is what I would do. Apply the veneers to the outside of the box, then rout square channels from the corners on the router table, and glue pieces of square stock to fill the spaces.
Where neither skill nor craftsmanship are present, can it be called art?

    Hi Josh,
Guess I do the same as Doug. Here some pics of one I did today hope it helps.

Last part STEP-6 either use a router trimming bit or, as I prefer, a Block plane to shave down to finished size. Most important of all HAVE FUN

    Cheers

Toolbags, thank you very much for that series of pictures that showed exactly what you did. Very nice piece of work may I say. It must have been tricky getting those perfect mitres on the edging too. Is the bottom edged in the same way or is that a one-piece of the same material? I am not ready to try any of that marquetry, yours is superb, but it looks so difficult to get right.

Wow! lovely box. What is the wood on the carcass?
I like that you have positioned that gorgeous lily off center

Thanks for that, Bottom is the same as top. Veneered with Jarra. Marquetry is easy just got to hold your mouth the right way, oh yeah and stuff things up a few times, the rest is easy.

    Cheers

    Hi gwambygine,

This far south we call it Silky Oak (Quartet Sawn) America it's know as Lace wood and Possibly in the UK as Plain Tree (Grain might be a bit closer). The wonderful thing about placing things off center is that you don't have to be exact with positioning...Lazy hey

Has is your shed life going?

    Cheers

    Hi Steve
Shed life has its ups and downs at the moment.
All these new machines and can I get them to do the right thing? NO!
The table saw is cutting about an eighth of an inch out. Might be the blade, might be alignment to the cast iron top, might be the fence system, Might be.....
I am mechanically challenged in political correct speech. It blows mitres out the window. I have made two box's one of which I will show if only to indicate the faults..
The leak in the new roof turns out to be condensation. The walls are stone and two feet thick, they were open to the elements for four months last year whilst the new roof was going on. Now they are releasing all that moisture back. Will take time for them to dry out. Some say at least 12 months. A new wood burning stove is being installed next week. That should help.
Does this sound like a complaint? Hell no, I gotta workshop! and am I chuffed? You betcha..

Love that wood. Up north here I use mostly local hardwoods. I'm running out of elm. But I have got two boards of the most gorgeous yew that I am saving until I get to grips with the human and mechanical faults.
This box in elm. Note the last view of the back... I put these hinges on and took them off three times... Still not right. It will make a good holder for something about the house though.
