Thankyou very much everyone, I am flattered by the support. The box has come up very well and I have received a few questions about the Australian content.
Firstly however, the hinge dilemma...
- the wall thickness is just under 12mm which is good for 'smart hinges' BUT the heavy radius in plan view means that the knuckle sticks out beyond the rounding
- I thought about piano hinges (NOT bunnings) BUT I have designed and made the lid too shallow and, with the sliding coat of arms only being 3mm from the face, I have no depth to screw into
- I thought about external face mounted hinges and some nice brass hinges screwed to the face don't look TOO bad
- with Elsa being of undoubted viking heritage I thought of the face mounted snake hinges that I have used on replica Chinese furniture BUT, with the lid being too shallow I would have to cut the snakes off the top half !
- SO, I am left with smart hinges OR neat face mounted hinges
For the Australian content....
- 'Magic Pudding' by Norman Lindsay
- 'Snugglepot and Cuddlepie' by May Gibbs
- 'Muddle-headed Wombat' by Ruth Park and Noela Young
- hand sculpted silver kangaroo and koala bracelet charms
- 2 turned huon pine bracelets ... by wheelin
- turned huon pine hair pin to turn a bracelet into a hair ring ... also by wheelin showing his feminine side
- a set of 2012 Australian coins and....
- a set of 2012 Swedish coins
yet to get.....
- a legally obtained piece of coral
- real gumnuts
- precious stone/s?
- sand from Cronulla Beach (Dad has become a keen surfer)
I'll post some more pics when the box is finished. Thanks again......

PS, unfortunately, and only after serious deliberation, I have reluctantly refused the VERY kind offer of a kangaroo scrotum coin purse although the tanned cane toad purse is still under active consideration!

Fletty,
The box is excellent! I'm sure when she's old enough to appreciate it she'll treasure it forever.

Funny you should say that skew, the visible cross section of the smart hinge is almost the same size as the huon stitch AND, if I'd had my wits about me, I could have used the hinge to continue the stitching across the box and lid join!
The only way I could do it now would be to have the box open like a book but that makes the coat of arms upside down!
another b*gger moment!

Ah so your not so sleepy after all and bright as a button...............well almost. Not to worry I have the idea all sorted. Being the three of you (Ruddy I don't think has seen this thread or my post yet).
The collaboration could be each doing part there of at own pace till assembly at which point the GtG or showing of could take place this could be somewhere even as far out of left field as 3 days at the SWWS.
