Default A box that works - Finally ...

I have finally managed to build a box that actually resembles a box and that I'm quite happy to show off to you expert folk.

The main box itself is made from Walnut (I'm not sure what type - any ideas?). The sides have Huon Pine inlays on the top edge. I thought this would help lighten the entire box up a bit. The top is made from Blackbean and the inside is lined with Huon Pine and a piece of padded felt.

The finish is a few brushed on coats of really thinned out dewaxed shellac. I then rubbed it out gently by hand with 800grit paper. Finally, some EEE and wax to top it all off.

    Cheers,
    Af.

P.S. For those interested, I found the Blackbean really nice to work with. It does have pretty crazy grain. I didn't have any adverse skin irritation problems but did have some breathing problems from the dust. After the first day using it I put on my super dust mask and had no problems since.

I like it - very tasteful and beautifully crafted! How did you fix the mitred joints together?

The external ones are simply glued. I may come to regret that in the future if they move but I'll take the risk!

Internal ones are just sitting there. The fit is quite tight so they don't move at all. I will eventually glue them to the inside of the box but will probably just leave the mitre joins pushed up against each other like that.

    Cheers,
    Af.

If they are accurately cut and the walls are not too thick (yours look good) they should be fine. You can put a size of diluted glue on before gluing up if you want to be a bit surer.

    Well Done Afro Boy,
I do like the way you have inlayed the Huon pine. Really accents the box.

Lovely looking box afroboy. I concur with all the above. I especially like the huon pine insert. Don't have blackbean over here, nice looking wood. Sounds as if it might be a little toxic? Yew is also supposed to be an irritant and I've just bought a bunch for next year. Can you tell what your super mask is? I have had trouble finding one that suits. I wear glasses for close work so they are on and off continuously, so a full face one won't work.....

    Cheers

Nice to come back to the box making section (I've been away a month) and see such a nice looking box.

I got a free piece when I visited AFT (a timber yard down here). He gave me a piece to try out on the condition that if I like it, I'll come back and buy more. Now I understand why they have some trouble selling it!

I know some people who develop rashes when using it. I only developed a slight breathing issue from the dust but thankfully no skin breakouts.

I probably oversold it as super! It's a half mask by Sundstrom (Sundström half mask SR100). Really comfortable. I wear glasses as well but unfortuantely they get in the way of the nose portion of this mask. I can do without the glasses when I'm sanding, etc. so it's no big deal.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Looks great Afro Boy, I reckon the huon band in the top really sets it off.

I also agree that the joints should be fine if they are cut well. I made a mitred document box about 3 years ago without any strengthening that shows no sign of problems. You could always cut some keys to go across the corners if you're worried about it, though you might have a bit of re-finishing to do then. I've thought about doing that to mine but have never got around to it...

    How big is it?

Thanks Willard. I thought it would just be too dark without it so I'm glad it turned out well actually.

It's slightly larger than an A4 sheet of paper.

    Cheers,
    Af.
