Default Small box for my grandaughters 6th birthday.

Thought I would have a go at making a little trinket box for my grandaughters 6th birthday. This is the result.
Red Ash with Red Cedar lid and Merbau mitre keys. All from the scrap bin. Finished Minwax WOP.

I didn't sign it, but now that you have suggested it I will do that when I am next over at their house.

Very nice! I really like the shaping on the lid! What did you use for the bottom?

that red ash is unlike any I have seen,

    Well done

agree with Alex above. Last box I did I got a gold plate engraved with the details of who made it for whom, the occasion and the date. You can then stick or screw it underneath or to the lid. The label was very well received.

Interesting you chose merbau for the keys, they look good. How did you glue them in - that timber is fairly oily and leeches tannin. you can see more about it here
    regards,

    Dengy

Hi Dengue, the Merbau was chosen for both its strength and contrasting colour. I have a fair bit of it that has been well weathered to remove the tannins and then dried again. The keys are a very snug fit and the glue used was a very thin CA which I applied using a wicking method I had seen used on other boxes.

    Lightbulb

I like it. The top gave me ani idea for my next box. I bought some Mesquite in Arizona last fall and have been looking for a use. A box lid can give me some experience working with that wood.
