Second Box - Karri with Ebony lid
This is my second ever box, it's much smaller than the first one I made and again I'm using recycled WA Karri floorboards for the carcass and the lid is Queen Ebony with a Rock Maple strip,
I used the maple strip because I think you do Ebony justice when you bring out its darkness with a contrasting lighter colour.
Joints are exposed splined mitres with Ebony splines - it's not glued together yet, just dry fitted and not sanded yet either except for the lid.
I am going to felt line the base only as I want to show the pink Karri on the inside and I will also fit small Ebony feet to it.
I'm going to glue it up as one piece then saw the lid off and probably use concealed barrel hinges.
Thanks for looking

artme - I jest you not, I got into it a few months ago and now I'm hooked. I have a lot of Karri and a fair bit of Ebony (I bought a 300mm long solid piece of 4x3 ebony for $11 and another at 800mm long for $26 - I don't think the guy knew what he was selling)

Great box Artme. Just a question. You have rounded the corners of the bottom piece - presumably because you didn't run the slots all the way across the sides and ends. But with mitre joints you can run the slots all the way through - and they don't show on the outside because they are inside the mitres. Was this because your exposed spline mitres might have intersected with the corners of the bottom piece? I am asking about this because I am planning to make a dozen boxes for Christmas presents and I am trying to do a lot of thinking things through before I blunder into it.

Some more progress
I've gotten a few steps further, I had the day off sick today and attempted to do some more but it was futile I just felt too rotten with this cold so I just took photos instead.
Firstly here is my embarrassingly simple mitre clamping jig - works awesome
As you can see if you look closely I joined the jig corners together so the angles were just under 90 degrees - this helps it to really clamp the mitres together tightly
After the glue dried I used a straight but to true up the top on the router table as I had to get a good finish straight off here - very little room to sand.
This was a "balls in your throat" affair as I had to run the work-piece between the fence and the bit and if it caught and threw it at me I think there would have been finger reduction going on...
Result is pretty clean and will only need light sanding
This is after I split the box on the table saw and sanded it true - I'm happy with the fit
These next 2 pics focus on the exposed/feature splines - I wasn't too sure if this was to be considered artistic or lazy but it looks good so I'm going to go with artistic...
Joints were very tight - I think the best I've done so far in my huge repertoire of 2 boxes.
The only mistake I made was to not allow enough depth on the lid for Barrel Hinges, it looks like I'll need to use little brass butt hinges. Anyone know where I can get them this small from?
