    Default Small Box with Latch

Another small box for cards or whatever and this time I thought about how I could add some latching of the lid and this what I came up with.

I had an off cut of 90x19mm pine, cut into 6mm slices with a jigsaw, glued together and hand planed to 5mm. I had some 2x3mm magnets and placed one in the spindle and in each locking rod orientated so unlike poles attracted to unlock and like poles repelled to lock.

Getting the rod length and latch hole depth right for reliability was a bit of a trial but got there in the end.

That's a nice simple design. I like the idea behind the latch.

I found a flaw in the latch design that if it unlocked with the lid off the locking rods ended up on the floor.

I came up with a couple of ideas to make them captive and ended up cutting a slot in each rod and a stopper just clear of the lock/unlock stroke in case of an accidental release.
