    Default Box lid thickness question

    Hi All,

I have a simple question for the collective brains trust here regarding lid thickness.

i recently acquired a small piece of special and expensive timber from a member (thanks Eugene) and intend to slice it accordingly.

The question is, what thicknesses do the members here use in their lids? The last thing that I want to do is muck it up by making it too thin.

    Thanks all.

    George

Depending on the size of the box, I would suggest making a "picture frame", of similar or contrasting timber, and fit a 6mm panel of your special timber, into a rebate in the "picture frame.

    I've gone down to 5mm on a 300 x 170 box with no dramas

I usually resaw a 3/4" board down to have a 5mm base & a 10mm lid. If it is a real fancy bit of burl I usually laminate a 5mm slice onto a plain bit of the same species. I'm not a Veneer person.

Well, I bit the bullet and resawed what I had into 2 x 9mm boards and a single 5mm board. After their sanded, I ‘should’ end up with ~ 7mm and maybe ~ 4mm.

The boards are currently resting just in case there’s warpage prior to sanding. Thanks for all the advice.
